Fighting Disinformation Roadmap E-Summit

The massive increase and rapid spread of disinformation and fake news in recent years, including deep fakes, shook the integrity of information and threatened democracy. Disinformation ranged from fictitious information or alternative facts to partisan reporting. Combining initial malicious intent with end-user amplification, they were propagated with the virality and speed of algorithm-driven mass and social media.

Disinformation had also become a complex system in which specific segments such as political propaganda, commercial click-bait, and hybrid cyber threats were connected through a flow of messages, networks, and companies in a cross-border and cross-media environment.

To counter the threat of disinformation, two major areas emerged: fact-checking and media and information literacy (MIL). This also created opportunities for newcomers to enter professional fields that needed a refresher and further synchronization between practitioners, agencies, platforms, and networks.
Accordingly, the Fighting Disinformation Roadmap E-Summit brought together leading practitioners in these two fields, as well as scholars, researchers, and innovators to exchange and pass on knowledge. They developed ideas, approaches, and strategies to develop a common roadmap to fight fake news, social and mainstream media manipulation, and disinformation.

Agenda

The E-Summit was broadcasted and opened to the public in an interactive session format to allow for shared perspectives and engagement between the experts and the public. Viewers were able to watch the sessions in real-time and participate.
This provided an opportunity for the public to learn from the experts, ask questions, and share their own perspectives on the issue of fighting disinformation. The interactive format also allowed for a more dynamic and engaging discussion, which fostered a sense of collaboration and collective action in the fight against disinformation. Overall, the public engagement aspect of the E-Summit was a valuable contribution to the effort to combat disinformation and promote information integrity.
