Ever since the break out of the Covid-19 pandemic, lots of false and misleading information have been floating around social media, TV, and often we hear these claims during our gatherings. Here are some of the popular ones:

MASKS ARE INEFFECTIVE AND DO NOT PROTECT AGAINST THE SPREAD OF THE VIRUS

In a new study, by the Max Planck Institute, FFP2 masks offer an extremely high level of protection against corona infection. If an infected and a healthy, unvaccinated person meet in an indoor area at a short distance, the risk of infection is only 0.1 percent even after 20 minutes. If the person is vaccinated, the risk of infection decreases even further. However, masks must be worn correctly. Without a mask and even with a lot of distance, the risk of infection is almost 100 percent.

VACCINES COULD CAUSE LONG-TERM SIDE EFFECTS

Vaccinations can have side effects, including those against Sar s -CoV-2 . While some vaccinated people only feel pain at the injection site, others could have a fever, headache or aching limbs. However, in the vast majority of cases, such side effects occur immediately, in the first days or rarely weeks after vaccination, and they are neither dangerous nor permanent.

” Vaccinations side effects will rarely appear after months – but especially not after years, ” said Bernd Salzberger, specialist in internal medicine at the Regensburg University Hospital, the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation . Carsten Watzl, immunologist at the Technical University of Dortmund, was even clearer to the “GEO” magazine: “Longterm side effects don’t exist, it has never happened before and will not occur with the Covid vaccination either.”

3.3 billion people worldwide are already fully vaccinated against the Coronavirus. Serious side effects were rarely observed. These could include heart muscle inflammation, which can also affect younger population. Otherwise, most diseases are mild and will heal within a few weeks. It’s also important to highlight that after being infected with the coronavirus, there is a risk of heart muscle inflammation at least six times higher than after vaccination.

CORONAVIRUS IS HARMLESS FOR THE YOUNGER POPULATION

In Switzerland, the numbers speak for themselves: Less than 1 percent of those under 39, infected with the Coronavirus, were hospitalized. The coronavirus is therefore much more dangerous for the elderly, who usually have a weaker immune system. Nevertheless, it is not true that young people are not affected at all. Although the portions are a small percentage, there were more than 5400 under 50-year-olds admitted to the hospital.  70 people between the ages of 0 and 49 died as a result of their Covid disease infection.

And then there is Long Covid with long-term consequences that occur weeks to months after the acute phase of illness – even in patients who had a mild course and were previously fit. Common symptoms include an e severe fatigue, headaches, insomnia, and a loss of taste and smell. Women seem to be affected more often. But there are also many youngsters and children suffering from Long Covid. The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) assumes that 20 percent of infected adults will develop it. while around 3 percent of children are affected.

Because the symptoms are so difficult to grasp and there is a high number of unreported cases, it is difficult to say how high the number of people affected really is in Switzerland. However, the experts agree that Long Covid is a common phenomenon – even among boys.
