“THERE ARE ABOUT 9 TIMES MORE CRITICAL CARE ADMISSIONS OF UNVACCINATED PEOPLE THAN PATIENTS WHO HAVE RECEIVED A COMPLETE VACCINATION REGIMEN.”
Since the outbreak of the fifth wave of the Cornoavirs epidemic, we often read on social media, Anti-vaxxers claiming that vaccinated people against Covid-19 are more hospitalized in intensive care or in traditional services. THIS IS SIMPLY WRONG!
Anti-vaxxers claim the following:
- “There more people vaccinated against Covid-19 in the resuscitation services than those who have not received any injection.“
- “The vaccine doesn’t protect against severe forms. There are 80% vaccinated people among those hospitalized for covid.“
BUT WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON?
In France, the occupancy rate of hospital beds is closely monitored by the Directorate of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (Dress), attached to the French Ministry of Health, which distinguishes two categories: conventional hospitalizations and those in critical care, which include resuscitation and intensive care. The population they have studied is of individuals over 20 years of age.
Their latest available statistics are for the period October 25-31, 2021. Dress found that the number of critical care admissions for unvaccinated individuals is stable. These represent 51% of critical care admissions and 44% of conventional hospital admissions. In this last week of October, the share of people admitted to critical care who received a complete vaccination regimen represents 42% in critical care and 48% in conventional hospitalization. The proportion of non-vaccinated people admitted to the ICU during the last available week is, therefore, higher than the proportion of those who received their injections.
However, in order for the comparison to be fully relevant, groups of people of equal size should be compared, with the number of vaccinated people vastly outnumbering the non-vaccinated. „With a comparable population size, there are about 9 times more critical care admissions [over the October 25-31 period] among unvaccinated people than among fully vaccinated people 20 years and older,“ Dress points out.
